Some define self-care as a luxury that includes long bubble baths. Actually, self-care can be done in little moments throughout the day.

Listen to this episode:
Self-Care is Everywhere
I went back and forth regarding creating longer content on self-care. Sometimes it seems like everyone is mentioning self-care. Am I right?Although I discuss it on Instagram, I feel like the term gets overused. It’s almost the point of being cliche. So, I didn’t want to add to the chatter without offering something meaningful. Also, I wanted you to gain something from my content.

What is Self-Care?
First, let’s define what falls under the category of self-care. It is basically an activity to give back to ourselves in healthy way. Similarly, as an educational psychologist, I see it as a way to regulate ourselves. A process to help us be our best. Likewise, it doesn’t have to be complicated. It just needs to work for you.
“Self-care describes a conscious act one takes in order to promote their own physical, mental, and emotional health.”

Self-Care for Different Objectives
Also, self-care can serve different purposes. For example, you can have a quick activity to boost your mood and another for when you need to recharge. I have activities for the following purposes:
- Boost My Mood
- A Sense of Completion
- Have a Good Laugh
- Treat Myself
- Seek Inspiration
Here are the activities I engage in for each purpose:
Boost My Mood by…
Listening to music from the 90s & 2000s. You know, just any era will work if it’s upbeat. I like to listen to songs that transport me to happy moments. For instance, I can hear a song and feel transported back to time in high school. Additionally, I like to put on some instrumental spa type music to create a relaxing vibe.

Create a Sense of Completion by…
Reorganizing a space or my clothes to donate or store. This does a couple of things. In addition to providing me with a sense of accomplishment, I gain clarity of thought! Also, it helps me make space for what I truly need.
Have a Good Laugh by…
Watching clips of the silliest movies ever like “Airplane” or “The Hang Over”. Did you know that humor can be a powerful tool to distract you from your thoughts? So, get those laughs in! Likewise, this is helpful if you are experiencing a tough season.
“…humor has a positive impact on intellectual and emotional functioning.”

Treat Myself by…
Getting my favorite coffee drink. You knew I would mention coffee. For example, having a favorite treat or drink does a couple of things. It gives you a moment to experience something you enjoy. Additionally, it engages your senses which brings you back to the present. Finally, being in the present helps us not get lost in our thoughts.

Seek Inspiration by…
Scrolling through Pinterest for positive quotes. I have a ton on my board. Additionally, I like to look for new color combinations for outfits. For example, ways to combine different tones of yellow. Also, I like to get some inspiration from retro style photos.

To wrap up, do what will work for you and help you fill your cup! Which Self-Care activity would you try?
