The impact of having a successful affiliate marketing strategy is underrated. We know that affiliate links can generate passive income. However, similar to anything we “should” be doing (going to the gym, eating healthy), bridging the gap between knowing and doing is elusive. Bloggers, content creators, and publishers know that they can monetize content with affiliate links. The doing it part is where it begins to fall apart. Here are the mistakes to stop doing and what to start doing!

My Affiliate Marketing Journey

I really leaned into affiliate marketing in 2020. This was after four years of blogging. Although I was using affiliate links on my blog since 2016, it was not a focus for my business. I was chasing (as everyone else was) brand deals and increasing my following on socials. Everything changed once I figured out my affiliate marketing strategy my LTK, Collective Voice, Amazon. My income increased and so did my joy of creating.

Here are five mistakes you are probably making (and what to do instead)

1. You Aren’t Repeating Items

First, one and done doesn’t work for content creation on socials. What I mean by that is you can’t share something once and expect your followers to see the content. The algorithm or just life can prevent your followers from seeing your content. Same goes for affiliate marketing! You need to show whatever item you are linking in different ways. Also, you can and should share an item multiple times. The repetition is what can convince your followers to take action.

2. You Aren’t Sharing Items You Actually Love

Next, your followers will know if you aren’t that into an item! Trust me, your energy will come through your content. So, don’t waste time sharing items that you aren’t loving. Instead, only share items that you geniunely like and will resonate with your audience. This will build your credibility. Likewise, you won’t be seeing deductions from your commissions from multiple customer returns!

3. You Don’t Have a Consistent Workflow

Also, affiliate marketing content creation is no joke! It takes consistent effort with strategic intent. You need a few systems to build your affiliate marketing business. This will help you develop a sustainable work flow. First, you need to link the items. Additionally, you need create a system to organize the links. Then, you need to create the content to promote the links. Link, organize, create, and repeat!

4. You Are Overthinking Your Content

Moreover, the content can be whatever will resonate with your audience. It doesn’t have to be editorial and glossy! Your affiliate content can be off the cuff, brief, or complex. The key is to create affiliate content that will resonate with your audience. Also, creating content that will convert to sales.

5. You Are Niching Down

Lastly, you are the niche! There’s no need to niche down when it comes to affiliate marketing. Here is why: your audience will buy items that make sense to them. So, share what you love! I will say this – do think about how and where you share the content. For instance, if you primarily share style on Instagram, post your non-niche content in stories. Test it out and weave in other content pillars connected to your affiliate programs.
