Although mental health awareness was in May, it is a topic that warrants attention every month! I got an opportunity to have a conversation on an Instagram Live regarding all things mental health with Jeanelly Concepcion, from The Fashion Lotus.

Listen to the episode:

The Stigma of Mental Health in the Latinx Community

We discussed how to break generational trauma by seeking mental health support. We chatted about how one can get support despite the negative view of mental health in the Latinx community. I mentioned that the collectivism embedded in the Latinx culture can lead to blurry boundaries within families. Working on developing boundaries is one way to start to find a path to access support.

Social Media – The Positive Aspects

We got into how social media can be a positive resource as it can help establish community. For example, a couple decades ago, we couldn’t find a Afrolatinx community online.

Although social media can be positive, it can negatively impact how we feel. We got into how the “likes” and attention can influence our self-esteem. We discussed how it is important to remember that most are sharing their highlight reel. Likewise, going back to creating on your own platforms, such a blog, is one way to combat the comparison trap as a creator.

How Fashion Can Impact Mental Health

We discussed how fashion can give your mood a boost. For example, I mentioned how when you feel good, the entire day can change. Also, feeling confident can shift your mood!

Seeking Mental Health Support

We got into tips on how to find a therapist. One main takeaway was to keep in mind that it can take time to find the right therapist. Connecting with your therapist is key. Additionally, come with some goals or topics you want to get into. It is your time! Stick with it – you are worth it! Read another post on counseling here.
