Creating a Vintage Look You Will Love on Budget

Although creating a vintage look is fun, it can be expensive. I got some tips to create a Mad Men worthy look without breaking the bank.

For me, vintage style is about putting together pieces to create the look. Here are the items that I use to create a vintage vibe.

Tip One

Get Some Vintage Style Accessories

Let’s start with the least expensive items. Think a beret, belt, or purse. These items, when styled a certain way, can change up an outfit.

I have about six berets in different colors. It is a fun little piece that can add some color too! Next, belts to cinch at the  waist are another item for a vintage vibe. Additionally, a fun purse can add a retro feel too.

Where do you find these? I get most of my retro style dresses from Amazon. You can visit my  Amazon Shop here. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

I get my berets from there, Target, and H & M. My belts are primarily from Target. TJ Maxx and Target are good for snagging some purses.

Tip Two

Get Pieces to Add a Vintage Feel

There are a few pieces that I like to wear when I want some vintage vibes. My go-to items are an a-line skirt and a petticoat

I have two petticoats. A white one and a black one. I wear them under my a-line skirts for extra volume.

"Pairing vintage clothing with decidedly modern shoes, bags and sunglasses is an easy way to dramatically ground an otherwise whimsical garment."

Tip Three

Get Dresses You Can Dress Up

Finally, just get dresses that you can style in a vintage way. These dresses don’t need to scream it. We don’t want that as there is a fine line between having style and wearing a costume. Instead, go with a style that allows you to add pieces.

I find that feminine dresses work best. They can be soft and flowy or they can be a structured sheath. The fit, as always, matters. What also matters is the print. Small prints with cherries, florals, or polka dots usually work. I like to add a bold red lip as well.

We want to keep this budget friendly. So, my go-to spots are Amazon, Target, Asos, and H&M. One other place to check out is a thrift store. I’ve found some gems there too! I have a post on thrifting here and here

Some additional things to consider when building your vintage inspired look

What I love about vintage and retro styles is that they can be “inspired” by an era. So, that means whatever you want it to mean. You can add a hint or go all in. Whatever it is, have fun! You never know what outfit you will create and love!
