I am going to start a new series of posts about trends. I’m not referring trends out there. Not the trends that are supposed to dictate what we wear. This is about the trends that are in my closet. In other words, what am I currently into and why.

Right now, what’s trending in my closet are pencil skirts. I got a pencil skirt that is black, stretch, and midi length. I styled it two different ways.

I have a variety of skirts styles in my closet. A pencil skirt stands out as the style that brings a classic feel to my outfits. Pencil skirts always remind me of Joan from Mad Men. I just loved watching that show for the fashion inspiration (and the writing).

There are a few things that I look for in a pencil skirt. My usual top three: fit. comfort, and versatility.

  1. Fit – As usual, fit is my number one priority when it comes to a pencil skirt. As I mentioned in my other blog posts, fit is the the foundation of every piece that I purchase. I think this is especially important when it comes to a pencil skirt because if the fit is off, it can look kind of boxy. So that’s the issue if it’s too loose. If it’s too tight, then it just looks bad.
  2. Comfort– Fit and comfort go hand-in-hand. My thing with comfort is that I need to be able to move. So I don’t want the skirt to be constraining. Then I can’t walk and I certainly can’t sit down in it. If it’s not comfortable, it’s not going to match my lifestyle.
  3. Versatility – So for versatility, I’m really looking at being able to wear it in different ways for different situations. I like to wear a pencil skirt in a casual way with a tee like I did in this post here. Then I like to wear it kind of dressed up like a nice blouse which is the other way I wore it here.

The first way I styled it was with a tie neck blouse. This top kind a has a drapey style to it. So I thought it was perfect to have it with a more fitted skirt.

I have been wearing this top on repeat on my Instagram feed and I just love the drapey feel of it! Here I’m wearing it to the Huntington library.

This top also has a bold print which I thought was perfect with the simplicity of this pencil skirt.

The second way I styled it was with a drapey tee and a scarf. Both tops were kind of a drapey style to contrast with the fitted style of the pencil skirt.

Ok, with this tee, I couldn’t decide if I wanted to do off the shoulder or on but I think both look fine. Since both pieces are pretty simple I went with a colorful scarf to add some visual interest to the outfit.

I just added a basic pair of black heels since the skirt hits just below my knees.

Other ways I could see myself wearing this skirt would be with a chambray shirt or maybe with a denim jacket in a little tee. I would wear it with a cami and a blazer for a more professional feel. I have a denim jacket that I can wear as a top so I might try that too.

Now it’s your turn, what’s trending in your closet?

… Because getting dressed (and living life) should feel good!
