Every fall I would keep an eye out for a leather jacket to add to my closet. One that I will get a lot of use out of and will be easy to throw on.
There are certain pieces you want to invest in like a leather jacket. A item to splurge on. Moreover, this is an item that can be a hit or miss. It can look to harsh or boxy, right? I found one that I have had for years now.
Here’s what to look for to find a leather jacket you’ll love.
This post was originally published in January 2017, it was originally titled “How to Wear a Leather Jacket Over 35” and updated in October 2021. This is one of the most popular posts so I figured I should update it and not focus on age as much!

“The silhouette needs to be clean and stand out with an unexpected color. Opt for a piece that is light enough to wear all day.”

Tip One
First, keep it simple. Even when I buy something different, like the type of collar or color, they are simple. My rule is that the jacket needs to be simple for versatility. For instance, not too many buttons, zippers, or other flair. Otherwise it looks too busy and gets a bit cheap looking.
Additionally, another simple leather piece is a pair of faux leather leggings. You can see how I styled mine here.
Also, I think that keeping simple works for how to style a leather jacket. I just paired it with high waisted jeans, a scoop neck top, and boots.
Tip Two
Second, stay with a fit that’s works for your shape. I say “flattering” but I think that word triggers folks. You just want a jacket that you feel dynamite when you put it on. You are spending money on this item. Therefore, it better be something you love putting on! Look for styles that are timeless and easy to blend with other items in your closet.
For example, that means not super cropped or too long. I like the jacket to hit at hip. Also, I prefer that it be somewhat fitted to create a clean lines. This is especially important is you have curves. That will help the piece be versatile.
Tip Three
Finally, invest in quality. Going too budget on a leather or faux leather jacket isn’t a good idea. Skimping on quality will bring down the entire outfit down a notch. Plus, the jacket is less likely to last you more than a couple seasons. Instead, respect yourself and your hard earned money. Be open to fast fashion stores (you can find some good faux leather jackets) like Zara and H &M. Likewise, be on the look out for sales at Nordstroms and buy what you will really like. You deserve it!
