Don’t Think You Can Wear a Tied Shirt? Try This
You can tie a shirt even if you are midsize. I got a couple of tips on how to rock this look (and feel comfortable).
It was about 1993. I was thin and wore whatever I wanted. Janet Jackson’s six pack abs from the “That’s the way love goes” were a lofty goal. However, I liked the fries from McDonald’s way too much. Anyway, I wore crop tops and tied shirts non-stop. Fast forward to now, two kids later and a different body, my shirt tying days were over. Then, I discovered a way I can do it and love it!

Tip One
Get the Right Shirt
First, find a shirt that is the right fit. What do I mean by that? Make sure it’s not too tight or way too loose. Here’s how to figure that out: Make sure that it is a top that you can wear the usual way. In other words, can you button it up. You want to have some fabric to be able to button it up.
You want to make sure it fits in the shoulder area. Also, that you can button it. If the shirt is more of a “blousey” fit (like a silk or linen shirt), you shouldn’t be swimming in it. Otherwise, it won’t create a structured silhouette.

Tip Two
Avoid Low Rise Bottoms
Second, stick with mid to high rise bottoms. If you are midsize or have curves, a mid to high rise is where it is at!
A tied shirt can be a chic look when done right. Let me explain, when you tie your shirt, you don’t want too much skin showing. Just a little bit is good enough. So, go with a higher rise so that the two pieces almost meet.
Additionally, you will thank me when you sit down without a wardrobe malfunction.
“A knotted shirt thrown over a slip skirt, a swimsuit, or pants is always a good idea.”
Tip Three
Just Try It
Finally, I was hesitant when it came to wearing a tied shirt. I get it. I thought “I will probably look silly” or “I look like I am trying to hard”. Then I remembered, how I feel is what matters. Also, if I liked the way I looked, then do it.
So, that’s what I did. My 1993 self would be like “work it girl” and, I think, that is pretty cool.
As always, my suggestion is to try it! Try different shirt with a variety of textures. Likewise, think of when to try this style. Maybe a pool day is perfect or when you just feel like it. Finally, have fun! Otherwise, what is the point?
