This is the first time in a few years that I bought a swimsuit. You haven’t bought a new one in years either? I hear you! Buying a new swimsuit is always a project for me. This year, I decided to get a new one. I got tips for finding the right swimsuit – that you will actually wear!

You can listen to this post on the Don’t Mix In Podcast:

Swimsuit

I’ve partnered with Meet.Curve and these swimsuits were gifted. I’m wearing a size 3x in all of them. You can get them here.

Alright let’s talk about swimsuits. I feel like buying a swimsuit that fits is like a second cousin to the search for jeans. When the fit is on point you feel like a million bucks! When the fit is off you want to cover up or just put on leggings.

At the same time, I do think it’s good to pay attention to your frame and what you feel most comfortable wearing. In other words, know what works for you and do more of that.

I also linked some similar swimsuits below:

We go through these stages:

(1) Denial: I don’t need to a new one), (2) Negotiating: I need one, but I don’t want to search for one, (3) Acceptance-But still not into it: Fine, I will get one but I’m not trying it on… sound familiar

In other words, we just don’t want to think about it. For me, that was the problem. I didn’t put much thought into the type of swimsuit I bought. So, I ended up getting a “whatever” style swimsuit and feeling whatever as a result.

I mentioned this before- That I have been working out more the last few months. I started doing that just to be healthier and feel better. Interestingly, although I wasn’t obsessed with losing weight, I actually lost weight. That meant I needed to get a new swimsuit – like it or not.

The Feeling Factor

The Intersection Between Style & Psychology

Will it matter in 5 or 10 years from now? Is what I ask myself when I am focusing on something having to do with the way I look. What will matter is how I felt and if I was modeling living fully to my kids. When you find that swimsuit that fits you just right, then you can focus on the moments with your family and friends. You can be present and forget that you are even wearing a swimsuit.

Alright, here’s what I did to get one that I would genuinely enjoy wearing:

1. Try Shopping Online

I usually just want to grab a swimsuit from Target and get it over with. Since I couldn’t go inside Target as much lately, I decided to try buying a swimsuit online. That meant that I had to measure myself. I talked about how I got into measuring myself in a previous post here

2. Know Your Shape

I think shopping for your shape was a thing a few years ago. Then it went away. I believe that you can wear what you want. At the same time, I do think it’s good to pay attention to your frame and what you feel most comfortable wearing. In other words, know what works for you and do more of that. For example, I have broad shoulders. So, I don’t do ruffles on my shoulders. I end up looking like a football player. With respect to swimsuits, I feel comfortable with a halter style versus a strapless.

3. Get a Swimsuit You Will Actually Wear

These suits on here are all ones that I can wear this summer and fit in my lifestyle. After I got these swimsuits I was feeling more adventurous. So I was looking at a red halter style swimsuit with belt. Think like James Bond style. I showed my husband and he was like “what’s with the belt?”. I was like (not understanding why he didn’t think it was HOT, “it’s the style, like a Bond girl”. Then he replied, “seems like that wouldn’t be something you could swim in with that belt”. I still thought this swimsuit was fire. However, he was right. We usually swim with our kids in the pool so this suit wasn’t practical. And, I might get caught on something when I’m playing a serious game of “Marco-Polo”.

I hope that this post has got you thinking about what swimsuit you’re going to buy! If so, let me know!
