Every fall I keep an eye out for a leather jacket to add to my closet. One that I will get a lot of use out of and won’t look silly on me.

Once I snag one I like, I try to think of different ways to wear it. I got two “looks” that pull together with a leather jacket.

That’s what we are Mixing Up in this post. Let’s get to it:

A leather jacket is something that I consider to be an investment piece

This an item that you may want to spend a bit more for higher quality and better fit. Once you are over 30 (I am 40), you want to be mindful of the type of leather jacket you buy. You want it to last.

My jacket is from Blank NYC from Nordstrom. I am wearing a Large. I like the fit of this jacket and that it is simple.

I know some women, including myself, worry about looking silly or like you are  “trying too hard to look cool”. No worries, I got you.

Here are my tips on what to look for when buying a leather jacket. Most of the same rules that I have mentioned in other posts apply:

  • Pay attention to Fit– Stay with a fit that’s flattering to your shape. That means not super cropped or too long. That will help the piece be versatile.
  • Keep it Simple-Even when I buy jackets with something a little different, like the type  of collar or color, they are simple. My rule is that the jacket needs to be simple for versatility. Not too many buttons, zippers, or other flair. Otherwise it looks too busy and gets a bit cheap looking.
  • Quality-While we are on the topic of looking “cheap”, know that going too budget on this one isn’t a good idea. Skimping on quality will bring down the entire outfit down a notch. Plus, the jacket is less likely to last you more than a couple seasons. Respect yourself and your hard earned money. Be open to fast fashion stores (you can find some good faux leather jackets).  Be on the look out for sales and buy what you will really like. You deserve it!

As for the dress, this sheath is from Ann Taylor. I bought it a few seasons ago. It’s comfortable and not too tight. I am wearing a size 14.
Here’s another look:

Keep it simple. A leather jacket and a basic tee is another look. I like this outfit for a movie date night or a lunch on the weekend. I get pretty much all V-Neck Tees from Target. I get the vintage style tees from Merona. I am wearing an XL.
I add my Hue Denim leggings and my leather jacket, and I am good to go! My Hue leggings (featured in a lot of posts) are an XL.
